The importance of the Patriarch Stephen Douayhi’s work, which concerns the Syro-Maronite model strophes and their poetic meters, has inspired us to prepare this critical edition, seeing that the publication made by Fr. Paul Ashqar, though very meritorious, is nevertheless inadequate.

Douayhi’s work makes use of two languages: The Syriac text of the model strophes and the explanatory Arabic Text, written in Karsuni.

In this edition, we publish in facsimile the whole original SM manuscript. Thus, the calligraphy of the manuscript is kept just as it is. The pagination is, however, slightly modified in order to fit the size of the present publication.

The study we devote to this edition consists of two parts. The first, an introduction, provides in three short chapters, information relating to the author, to his work, as well as to the Syriac poetry. The second part translates the Karsuni text and offers a commentary and a critical apparatus to the different elements of the work. Appendices, tables and indices will be added in order to complete the edition.
