Description

Children Who Hugged the Mountain

Dr. Irma K. Ghosn

In the late 1990s, numerous quarries have operated in Lebanon, many of them illegally. Mountains have been carved and the landscape destroyed in many locations. Re-forestation of the vertically cut, often concave, mountain-sides will not be possible. In one quarry operation, a prehistoric cave was actually demolished. Many homes have had their walls and foundations damaged from the explosives used at the quarries. Olive pickers have been injured, at least in one case fatally, by rocks flying from the quarries as a result of carelessly used dynamite.
