The Smoke  Patrol

In villages and small towns, in the developing countries, many people still burn refuse, yard and garden waste and even old car tires.  It is not uncommon to see people burning weeds that have been first killed by exfoliants or branches that have been treated with pesticides.  The resulting clouds of harmful and disturbing smoke can be seen rising from various areas almost daily, and people who lise in the vicinity of the fires suffer from the fumes and smell.

The toxic fumes from these fires cause allergies and diseases, some of which take time to develop but which are fatal.

The burning garbage also releases carbon dioxide, which is heavier than air, so it hovers above ground and contributes to the greenhouse effect.

The problem of refuse burning is caused mainly by the lack of viable practical alternatives on the one hand and ignorance about the consequences on the other.  One viable and practical solution for household and yard waste is composting, which has regained popularity in highly developed countries such as Switzerland, USA, and the Scandinavian countries.
