Results from Contemporary Research on the Qur'an – The question of a historio-critical text of the Qur'an

This anthology contains select contributions of the panel Results of Contemporary Research on the Qur'an: The question of a historico-critical text of the Qur'an, organized by the Orient Institute of Beirut at the First World Congress of Middle Eastern Studies in 2002. The central idea of that panel was to elaborate on recent trends in Qur)anic studies and to formulate new goals, and perhaps even make some progress towards these goals. Contemporary studies on other religions based on revelations in the scriptures have led the way and created a template for how to tackle the issues: the compilation of a critical edition accompanied by a historical commentary of the textual bases, which believers take as divine revelation.
