The temples against which the prophet Ezekiel fulminated lie in ruinous abundance throughout the length and breadth of Lebanon. They perch on lofty crags, reached only by precipitous goat paths; they lie strewn beneath stupendous cliffs, moist with the spray of foaming water; they stand  in the deep and somber shade of great gnarled trees, the remnants of the sacred  groves of the past.

Few countries can boast such a rich legacy from the ancient world. Lebanon’s Roman temples – from the massive creations of Baalbek to the modest structures at Khirbet el-Knese “provide inexhaustible and absorbing material for the historian, the archaeologist, the architect, the astronomer, and the humble inquiring tourist.”

Les sanctuaires contre lesquels se déchaîne la colère du Prophète Ezéchiel, ont parsemé de ruines en tous sens les croupes et les ravins du Liban. us couronnent les pitons escarpes,  a peine accessibles par des sen tiers de chèvre; ils sont épars  sous l’aplomb terrifiant des falaises, éclaboussées par l’embrun  des cascades; i/s se pelotonnent au creux de l’ombre opaque des grands arbres,  aux troncs- tortures, survivants d’un bois sacré de jadis…

 Peu de pays peuvent se vanter de posséder un legs aussi riche des civilisations antiques. Les Temples romains du Liban – des architectures grandioses de Baalbeck aux modestes vestiges de Khirbet el-Knessé -offrent un champ de travail passionnant et inépuisable a l’historien comme à l’archéologue, à l’architecte aussi bien qu’à l’astronome, et plus encore peut-être à la curiosité du simple touriste.
