The Penetration of Arabia:  A Record of The Development of Western Knowledge  Concerning  the Arabian Peninsula

By David George Hogarth

This book describes the rediscovery of the Arabian Peninsula by the European  world. From 1761, when the first scientific expedition was sent from Europe, increasing numbers of the curious, scholarly, and adventurous travelers of all nations went there to discover more about the mysterious land.  The author traces the often stormy fortunes of these men, and their contributions to furthering scientific knowledge of the Peninsula.

Reproductions of maps of Arabia from Roman times to the nineteenth century accompany the text, ranging from Ptolemy’s early map of Arabia Felix to Imam Sherif’s Survey of Hadhramaut in 1893.

The book ends with a summary of the extent of geographical knowledge of the Peninsula in 1904. This enthralling work will appeal alike to the geographer, the historian, and the general reader.
