Crossing the Sands

By Sir Wilfred Thesiger

Sir Wilfred Thesiger is considered to be the last of the great explorers; he is also one of the finest living travel writers. His memorable adventures with travelling companions bin Kabina and bin Ghabaisha have provided inspiration to readers who can only imagine his remarkable exploits. An outstanding photographer, Thesiger is unique amongst travel writers of the past having had the opportunity to take photographs which do more than complement his formidable achievements. Those familiar with Arabian Sands will see for the first time, in this book, Thesiger’s classic prose lavishly illustrated by many of his finest photographs. Wilfred Thesiger spent his early childhood in Abyssinia, a country utterly remote from the modern world. As a schoolboy in England, Thesiger had resented cars and aeroplanes, realising that they would diminish the world and rob it of its diversity. While he was serving in the Sudan, Thesiger spent his three months’ leave in 1938 travelling with camels and two Zaghawa tribesmen across the Sahara to the Tibesti Mountains. This journey was the prelude to his later journeys in Arabia described in Crossing the Sands. Thesiger has always regarded his five years with the Bedu in Arabia as the most important and rewarding years of his life. This edition contains the same colour map which appeared in the first edition of Arabian Sands in 1959.
