Description
A Photographical Remembrance of Lebanon
by John Waterbury
Sarah and i came away from our years in Lebanon with a sense of what binds Lebanese together, a sense of style, and a sense of how to deal with others, even if one doesn't particularly like those others. Lebanese have a great sense of humor, fun, and enjoyment built around family, food, and music. They have the gift of taking interest in others without prying into or invading one's privacy. They do this on one of the most magnificent stages imaginable: the coasts, valleys, mountains and plains of a country only one quarter the size of Switzerland. In these pages i pay sincere but inadequate tribute to the Lebanese and their homeland.
After serving as the president of the American University in Beirut from 1998 to 2008, Waterbury has released a book of his photographs of Lebanon. The collection, which includes images of the campus and various locations in the country, is accompanied by Waterbury’s reflections on his time at the university. Waterbury is a former Princeton professor in the Woodrow Wilson School and the politics department.
