يتضمن هذا المرجع الشامل والأول من نوعه، الذي استغرق إعداد أبحاثه المعمقة خمسة أعوام كاملة، واقتضى تضافر جهود ثلاث مؤسسات وفرق من الباحثين، وصفاً تفصيلياً دقيقاً لِـ 418 قرية فلسطينية دمرتها إسرائيل، عمداً، وأجلت سكانها عنها خلال حرب 1948. ويقدم، من خلال مداخلاته المصنفة، بيانات إحصائية، ولمحة تعريفية طوبوغرافية وتاريخية واقتصادية، عن كل قرية من تلك القرى عشية حرب 1948. ثم يبين ظروف وقوعها تحت الاحتلال العسكري الصهيوني، والمصير الذي آلت إليه، لينتقل بعد ذلك إلى عرض الوضع الراهن للموقع الذي كانت تقوم عليه القرية، بما في ذلك المستعمرات الاستيطانية التي أقيمت على أرضه. ويحتوي المرجع على مجموعة كبيرة من الصور والخرائط والملاحق، كما يتصدره مقدمة تحليلية بقلم وليد الخالدي، المؤرخ العربي الأبرز لحرب 1948، يعرض فيها أوضاع سقوط الريف الفلسطيني في يد الاحتلال الإسرائيلي، في إطار عرض تحليلي أشمل لمجريات الحرب، ولتطورات القضية الفلسطينية بمعطياتها وعواملها المتفاعلة.

وليد الخالدي، مؤرخ ومرجع في القضية الفلسطينية. ولد في القدس سنة 1925، وتخرج من جامعتي لندن وأكسفورد. عمل أستاذاً في جامعة أكسفورد، والجامعة الأميركية في بيروت، وجامعة هارفرد، وزميلاً باحثاً في جامعة برنستون، وزميلاً باحثاً متقدماً (Senior Research Fellow) في مركز دراسات الشرق الأوسط في جامعة هارفرد طوال الفترة 1982-1996. وهو عضو منتخب في الأكاديمية الأميركية للآداب والعلوم. كما أنه عضو مؤسس في مؤسسة الدراسات الفلسطينية وأمين سرها منذ تأسيسها سنة 1963. أسس الخالدي مجلس أمناء أصدقاء المكتبة الخالدية في القدس، وهو أحد مؤسسي الجمعية الملكية العلمية في عمّان، وجمعية التعاون الفلسطينية. كتب الخالدي كثيراً بالعربية والإنكليزية في الشؤون العربية والدوليــة. وقد ظـهرت مقــالاته فـي Foreign Affairs; Politique Etrangère; The New York Times وغيرها، وكذلك في كبريات الصحف العربية. ونال العديد من الجوائز على مساهماته الأكاديمية المتميزة.

All That Remains: The Palestinian Villages Occupied and Depopulated by Israel in 1948

The culmination of nearly six years of research by more than thirty participants, this authoritative reference work describes in detail the more than 400 Palestinian villages that were destroyed or depopulated during the 1948 war. Going beyond the scope of previously published accounts, All That Remains has relied extensively on field research to pinpoint the precise location of village sites through former residents and guides. The body of the text is devoted to the villages themselves; each village entry comprises statistical data and several narrative sections. These last include a section on the village before 1948 summarizing its history from a wide variety of Arab and Western sources and synthesizing information about the villages topography, architecture, institutions, and economic activity. Village entries also include a section, based on Israeli as well as Arab accounts, focusing on the military operations that led to the conquest of the village. Finally, entries contain a description of the current status of the site, including post-1948 Israeli settlements established on confiscated village lands. Several hundred photographs, a number of informative maps, and five valuable appendices enhance the text.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Born in Jerusalem, Walid Khalidi was educated at the University of London and Oxford University. He taught at Oxford, the American University of Beirut, and Harvard. Khalidi is the general secretary of the Institute for Palestine Studies (IPS) and Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
