عالجت هذه الدارسة تأثير الحرب العظمى من خلال عدة مستويات من الرؤية: مستوى بلورة الهوية الوطنية القومية، ومستوى استبطان تجربة الحداثة في أحاسيس الناس. يظهر هذان المستويان للوعي بعد مضي قرن من الزمن وكأنهما خطاب واحد متكامل – على الرغم من كونهما تجربتين منفصلتين في وجدان الناس الذين عاشوا أهوال الحرب العظمى. فأحاسيس الحداثة التي شملت ظهور الفردانية، والحب الرومانسي، وزيادة فرص الحراك المهني، والحياة المستقلة عن العائلة (وإن كانت حياة تعتمد على حيّز العائلة) كلها تحولات خاضها الناس كتجارب لم ترتبط بأذهانهم بالضرورة بتبلور وعي قومي جديد في فلسطين، مع أن الظاهرتين تزامنتا. ذلك بأنه على الرغم من ارتباط هذين الحدثين معاً – بمعنى أن التغيير الأول أوجد الإطار الهيكلي لحدوث الثاني، فالواقع أنهما كانا منفصلين كتجربة حياتية. فقد كان ظهور الفردانية المستقّلة عن إطار العائلة والقوم تجربة حادة وواضحة المعالم واتخذت شكل التمرد الإبداعي والاستقلال الفردي، وكان التعبير عن الهوية الوطنية كانتماء متعدٍ للارتباطات المحلية – بعكس المتوقع – هلامياً ومجرداً.

تتميز أهمية يوميات العسكري إحسان (كما هو الوضع مع يوميات الفصيح وآخرين من المقاتلين) في بعدين. تميزت أولاً في أن مؤلفيها كانوا جنوداً عاديين وغير مساءلين تجاه السلطة من خلال آرائهم أو أعمالهم إلاّ بالمعنى الأخلاقي الضيق. وثانياً تميزت كتاباتهم في أنها دُوِّنت في لحظة حدوث الحدث، وبذلك سمحت لنا أن نستمع إلى خطاب ذلك الزمان بلغته وأن تعيش التجربة كما تجلت للكتابة آنياً. فهي في النهاية أفكار وأحاسيس لا تشوبها الرقابة الذاتية ولا تخضع لعملية إعادة الصوغ في ضوء التجربة الاسترجاعية.

تلقي يوميات الحرب أضواء جديدة على التغييرات التي اجتاحت الحياة اليومية في مدن المشرق العربي في نهاية الحقبة العثمانية. نرى ذلك في وصف محمد الفصيح ليوميات القتال في جبهة جاليـپـولي، وفي يوميات الحياة اليومية خلال خدمة إحسان الترجمان في القيادة العسكرية العثمانية في القدس، على الرغم من الاختلاف الجذري في رؤية الكاتبين، وتجربتهما المتباينة للحرب. فهذه اليوميات تعكس تحديداً تمايز التركيب الإثني والتغيير في الوعي والانتماء الوطني في أوساط جنود الجيش العثماني وضباطه.

The hero of our story is Ihsan Hasan al-Turjman (1893-1917), an ordinary recruit in the Ottoman military headquarters in Jerusalem. His life was short and uneventful, having served as a clerk in the Logistics Department (Manzil), and briefly as a foot soldier in Nablus and Hebron, but his observations on the manner in which the succession of military events impacted his relationship to his city and his nation, are without parallel. The power of these diaries lie in their exposure of the texture of daily life, long buried into the political rhetoric of nationalist discourse, and in the restoration of a world that has been hidden by subsequent denigration of the Ottoman past the life of communitarian alleys, of obliterated neighborhoods, of heated political debates projecting possibilities that no longer exist, and the voices of street actors silenced by elite memoirs: soldiers, peddlers, prostitutes, and vagabonds. By the third year of the war the diaries project a desperate search for normalcy daily life normalcy that was experienced in pre-war Ottoman Palestine, but seems to have eluded its citizens for the next hundred years.

Salim TAMARI is IPS senior fellow and the former director of the IPS-affiliated Institute of Jerusalem Studies. He is editor of Jerusalem Quarterly and Hawliyyat al Quds.

He is professor of sociology at Birzeit University and an adjunct professor at the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies at Georgetown University. He has authored several works on urban culture, political sociology, biography and social history, and the social history of the Eastern Mediterranean.
