Footprints - Memoirs of an Indian Patriarch

By Maghanmal J. Pancholia

This book is the autobiography of Maghanmal J. Pancholia, a successful entrepreneur and a stalwart of the Indian community in Dubai, his home since  1942. The author travels back in time to walk through the alleys of his beloved Thatta in undivided India. Punctuating the narrative with anecdotes in his characteristically unassuming style, he traces the metamorphosis of Dubai from a quite coastal town to a bustling city that never sleeps. More significantly, the book encapsulates some of his most notable achievements that epitomize his stature and the personality he truly reprents.

Mr. Pancholia belongs to the Thattai  Bhatia community from India, which is the oldest expatriate community to have moved to the then Trucial States. It is a close-knit and closed community with about 10,000 members worldwide. He arrived to Dubai in 1942 at the age of 17.  He started Private Electricity Company and supplied Dubai with power during 1957-1960 after which he was elected Director of Dubai Electricity founded by H. H. Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum (Late Ruler of Dubai) from 1961–1980. He was Founder, Chairman and Trustee of Indian High School, Dubai from 1960 – 1979, later became Chairman Emeritus. He served as Board member of Al Maktoum Hospital Board, (Created under the Chairmanship of the British Political Agent) as a representative of Indian Community. He is the only Indian expatriate to be nominated to the board of Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He was elected to the advisory board of Emirates Financial Services.

The Maghanmal Jethanand Pancholia group is now a conglomerate dealing in steel, household products, real estate, and investment management.
